The Beginning

In 2008, 18-year old Jasmine Kim and 20-year old David Dooley met while working at a summer camp on Vancouver Island. Jaz had her sights set on medical school, and Dave was an aspiring coach; they both lived in Victoria, and they both loved volleyball. Jaz’s interest in the sport was purely recreational at the time, but Dave had amassed several provincial and national championship medals and had decided to pursue a career in coaching volleyball.

Dave’s passion for volleyball at that camp was matched only by his interest in Jasmine. After a few invitations to play grass volleyball with him, Jaz developed the same enthusiasm for the sport. Dave fostered her interest and strengthened her skills, and the two went on to win nearly every tournament in which they competed. They organized club volleyball at the University of Victoria alongside their schoolwork and used walleyball (indoor volleyball played on a racquetball court) to stay in practice during the winter. These two spend their date nights rewatching previous games with friends or preparing for upcoming matches with video analysis. Their passion for the sport is very, very real.

Beach Volleyball

Dave and Jaz moved to Vancouver and now compete at Kitsilano Beach—a welcome transition from grass volleyball. Jaz is now a doctor of naturopathic medicine, and she helped form the Kitsilano Women’s Volleyball Club, in which she competes. Dave is the head coach of the provincial beach team that competes in American AVP tournaments.

Like many other athletes, the pandemic put a hold on Jaz and Dave’s 2020 summer volleyball plans. But the couple had a new source of happiness: they were expecting a baby due October 2020. Dave and Jaz have relied on Wilson volleyball equipment throughout their journey to keep them in the game. And when they had their baby, they named him Wilson Dooley-Kim. After they reached out to us with their story, we had to make sure Baby Wilson and fam were set up with the best gear to grow into. We may or may not have included a custom Team Wilson onesie and  Cast Away Wilson volleyball, too.

Welcome to the team, Wilson Dooley-Kim!
